Accreditation of Prior Learning
Líonra initiated a pilot project to develop a standard model, accrediting prior learning of employees in the workplace in the area of Information Technology (IT) for organisations in the BMW region and was rolled out across its member institutions. The project was designed to meet a need which had been identified across the region for improved IT skills amongst the workforce, particularly in small and medium enterprises. Many employees in these enterprises had acquired some knowledge and skills relating to IT. However these skills were often uncertified and this gap had to be identified and remedied. The project was co-funded by FÁS and ran from March 2006 to September 2007. Originally the project was scheduled to take place over a shorter timeframe but delays were encountered in sourcing the two Coordinators and an extension was agreed.
APL is a system whereby knowledge, skills and competences acquired through work and life experience can be identified and measured using established criteria, thus facilitating access to third level academic programmes and exemption from particular modules.
In making an application for the APL project, applicants built a portfolio of evidence demonstrating how their learning matched the required learning outcomes against a particular IT module in their local institute of Technology or University. APL Mentors were on hand to provide applicants with support, guidelines and assistance in making applications for the APL and/or in compiling portfolios. A lecturer then assessed the portfolio and decided whether or not the applicant received recognition for that learning. Recognition was offered in the form of a single subject certificate or if the applicant decided to pursue a further course of study, he/she could complete a course in their local institute of Technology or University where credit or exemption for that particular subject could be obtained.
